    You DO need to nip that in the bud. One thing that helped me
    was that I had these classes right before recess. If they
    completed their check-out they were to sit down and start
    reading their books. If they had bee restricted from check-out
    becasue of overdues, they were to take a magazine and read. I
    woudl remind them if necessary that recess would start when
    they had spent an apprpriate time on task in the library.

    Once the circulation system is second nature, teach a couple of
    students from each class to check out books. Then you can help
    students with book choices. I had first graders who took care
    of all the check-out for their class--granted, we were on
    manual check out. They would have it completely under control
    and I could take care of looking for things with kids and/or
    monitoring behavior in the stacks.
