    I've never been in a position to time checkout, but an off-the-cuff
    estimate is about 10 seconds per kid plus 5 seconds per book,
    speeding up later in the year, which would be about 10 minutes for

    Ah--malfunctioning equipment. Double the above time estimates. Now
    you have problems. Do you know if the problem is hardware or
    software? Replacing buggy hardware can be pretty cheap and save a
    lot of grief.

    Self checkout is good, if you trust the kids not to check out in
    someone else's name.

    If they are behaving reasonably as they "look for books", what's
    the harm?
