    Post: Library time

    Posted by Susie on 9/04/08

Oh, boy, i hope you get lots of responses! I also have 40
    minute classes.

I had my first K-5 classes this week. To be honest, they
are so young it was more like PreK-4 but I have to teach
    the kids that show up!

Here is how my K class went:
I met them all at the door with HUGE sunglasses and told
them I had heard they were so bright I was afraid they
would be blinded. (Start with a gimmick!)

5 min; They all had nametags, so I went over their names,
got them settled and took a class picture.

5 min: went over behavior expectations

5 min: Read a book. I had another one but they couldn't
have handled it. (I also had a ritual poem to begin story
time but skipped it...need something easier)

5 min Sang a song: If your name begins with A...stand up
please! (god love 'em, this was too hard for some)

10 minutes Showed them the centers: they could do I Spy,
    color, or look at books.

That brought me up to 25 minutes. I'd had enough. I lined
them up and took them to the water fountain. Half don't
know how to walk in a line (I know this is typical...but
not so comical when I'm trying to make a good impression in
    my new job!-)

Took them back to class early...after one look at my face,
their teacher yelled at them. I TOLD her in front of them
that the were a great bunch of kids and that I would be
more prepared for them next time. We are going to do
wiggly fingerplays. I'm also looking for some K Videos on
the library. They wanted to watch my big TV.

In general, though, for grades 1-3 I will do 15-20 minutes
for storytime, 20-25 for checking out and I will have at
least three activity centers for them to choose from.

For 4/5 I plan to do book talking instead of reading and
they can use the computers and one of their activity
centers will be 'adopt a shelf' or some other chore they
    are responsible for.

Second grade is the BEST...they love to listen to stories,
are polite enough to be quiet, and are fairly independent
about checking out books. Or maybe it is just because they
are fresh first thing in the AM.
