There are several different genres that get lumped together as
SF. The science-based science fiction has become much less
common in the past few years, as fewer writers want to both
learning science, and fantasy sells to a larger audience.

You may have to go back the 50s, for a Heinlein juvenile or an
Asimov book. The Asimov Robot series (The Caves of Steel, The
Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn, and the short story "Mirror
Image") may be a good choice.

If the language and culture are too dated, you may be better off
with non-fiction. My son loved "Physics of Superheroes" and
    "Science of Harry Potter"
