Post: Ideas?? Library Vocational Program for Students with Autism
My school has partnered with a program that assists
students on the autism spectrum develop work skills. I
think the program idea is excellent, but I'm struggling to
come up with tasks to fill two hours worth of vocational
time once a week. As all librarians know, accurate
shelving is not as easy as some kids (and even adults)
think. Some of the students are capable and do a great
job, but others are not up to the task. And even so, the
shelving doesn't take them as long as it takes me to shelf
read and make sure books are shelved correctly.
I've tried having students place the clear protectors over
new spine labels and barcodes, but that only took them
about 10 minutes to complete the cart it took me 3 hours to
create for them.
Does anyone have any ideas for some easy vocational
activities that would fill two hours that would cater to
varying levels of ability and have an easy prep? What are
some of your "wish I had time to do" things?
