Re: Why you should use the book "A Child Called It'
Posted by Ayesha on 10/09/07

This book was first introduced to me by one of my 6th graders in a
Baltimore City Public School. I decided to read it as a class,
becuase it was interesting, the kids were all onboard (especially the
reluctant readers), and I was able to teach them to look out for signs
of abused children (as many students that I had had been abused). I
have also used it with 9th, 10, and 11th graders, and I think this is
one of the best books that can be read as a class. So many themes and
lessons can be created from this. I spent a lot of time on:

using context clues and building vocabulary
    point of view
reciprocal teaching (clarifying, predicting, questioning, and
    summarizing)
    writing letters

and I was also able to bring in other topics like child abuse,
parenting, mental illness, etc. The choices are endless. If you
    teach in a very stuffy area, then I would get parental consent first;
however, regardless of what demographic of students whom you teach,
some of them will come across other kids who may not recieve the best
treatment at home, and this book is an excellent example of triumph
    over trajedy.
