Re: Lesson plan idea for book"A Child Called It'
Posted by Debbielyn on 4/20/08

I actually read parts of this book with my fourth grade
advanaced LA class. One student in the class was reading it,
and she and I would often discuss it. Our conversations
interested the other kids who begged me to read the book as
a class. I had to get permission from my principal as well
as parent permission. We didn't read the whole book, I felt
that there were some parts of the book that were too
sensetive to discuss at such a young age.
I focused on character education aspects, learning not to
judge a person based on their appearance and actions. David
was judged harshly by both students and teachers alike
because he stole food and always looked dirty and smelled.
There was a reason for how he looked and behaved. One
teacher finally looked deeper and she was the reason he was
helped. We also discussed how other children could have
    helped David.
A parent who was concerned with the book content came in and
observed some of my lessons. She was very pleased with how
the lessons were presented, and ended up returning just to
participate. I also had the school social worker come in and
do a presentation on abuse. Before her presentation, as a
class we brainstormed questions we wanted to ask her. She
said she was very impressed with the depth of the students
    questions.

I still have people who question my use of the book, but
looking back, I still feel I made a good choice. I was very
careful about my lessons, and the content I used. My
students throughout the year had also proved to me, through
other content material, that they were mature and
intelligent enough to handle the material presented.
