Re: First Teaching Job--I'm scared!!!

Try to relax, you'll be fine...trust me. Hopefully you have a
mentor on your grade level. Always see that person, as well as
your grade-level colleagues, for help. Make sure you have your
own copy of the standard course of study and pacing guides.
The SCOS lets you know what to teach and should give some
insight on how to teach it. The pacing keeps you on track with
what you have to teach and how long you need to spend on it.
But remember this important note: nothing is carved in stone
and you have to cater to the needs of your students. You may
need to spend a little more time on an objective, which will
help student mastery. Also, there may be objectives that do
not require the paced amount of time. I teach all subjects and
believe me, it can be challenging. It will help if you can
intergrate across the disciplines. As educators, we learn new
things every year-veteran teachers as well as novice teachers.
I'm sure you'll do fine. A journal may help relieve daily
stressors. And don't work late everyday, you have a life
outside the classroom. When teachers say the work is never
done, it's true-doesn't matter how long or how hard you work!
all anyone can ask for is your best. I know the students will
love you. Be firm, consistent, and loving. I know you'll have
a great year!
