    Re: First Teaching Job--I'm scared!!!
    Posted by Sara on 8/11/08

First off, sounds to me like you got a dream job - I'm envying
    you.
What exactly everything is, is a question you might have asked
them.... but teaching art and music is a wonderful break in
the day if you get to do it - don't let it stress you out.
Can you draw? I can't and yet I can teach art when I have to.

Were there Spanish speaking artists? Only Picasso, Dali and
several other major artists. You don't have to know what you
teach - you can be a learner along with the kids. That makes
it a journey you're on together and that can be fun. The kids
LOVE it when you too are a part of the group learning along
    with them.

5th grade is one of my favorite grades. They can do many
things on their own yet they're still children and will play
and can enjoy the school day. They're not jaded as 7th
graders become and 8th graders are. They don't cry for their
mothers, can open their own lockers (most of the time) zip up
their own jackets (all of the time) and so what if they never
have a pencil? Put a box of them on your desk.

Are these kids Spanish speaking as a first language? I'm
guessing not unless you got your job in a Spanish speaking
country. Is this a Spanish immersion class? Oh, what fun if
it is and if it is, getting the subject/curriculum through the
language is going to be the challenge. It's not what you'll
be teaching them that's the challenge - it's translating it
even if you are completely fluent in Spanish. It will still
take up time, it will slow things down so don't worry that it
will be moving too fast for you.

    > I just got my first teaching job. I should be thrilled,
    > instead I'm miserable. I wanted to teach a lower grade,
    > since I'm new and do not have that much classroom
    > experience. I was offered to teach the fifth grade. The
    > catch is that I would have to conduct the class in Spanish -
    > -which is not a problem---but that I have to teach them
    > everything....
    > What exactly is everything???? does that mean that I'm with
    > them the whole day with the exception of Gym class and
    > lunch???...M I supposed to teach them Art?? Music???
