    Re: Rules and Consequences
Posted by Posting consequences can come back to haunt you on 8/14/08

When you need to get a seriously unruly student out of the
room, you don't want to hear "You can't send me to the
principal. You haven't moved my seat yet! I still have two
    chances!" etc.

When students are chronically misbehaving, be sure to call the
parents! That's time well invested, and it lets the students
know you're serious. But don't include it on a List Of
Consequences. Otherwise they'll just go home and erase the
message machine once they've hit Offense Number 2. Calling
home should generally be a guerrilla action -- no warning,
just pick up the phone. HS students are old enough to learn
the value of expecting the unexpected.

Unless you've found detention to be a worthwhile experience,
I'd skip that one. Detention punishes you!

It's worthwhile to spend maybe half an hour going over rules.
By the time they reach high school, most of them know the
drill. The students who plan on behaving with self-respect
really won't need a lot of rule reinforcement. The rest will
largely ignore the discussion anyway. And if the kids have
five or more classes, they're not going to want to hear "Class
Rules" after about lunchtime on the first day of school.
