    Re: A tricky interview question!
    Posted by Lea on 8/30/08

At the beginning of each school year, with each new group of
students, the first thing that you have to do is establish
that you are in charge. So, get your students seated and
quiet. Allow them to continue to sit with friends, or mix
them up (your choice!. Introduce yourself and give your
qualifications. Then, I suggest you do some kind of
Icebreaker activity so that you can get to know your
students. There are all kinds of these online...just do a
search. The first fifteen minutes of class will set the tone
for the rest of the year...you have to establish that the
class will be managed by you, with an attitude of respect for
all. You may want to go over your class expectations (like
tardiness or other behavior issues), but I have found that
this works best later in the class. I also suggest that you
post your most important rules in your classroom and take
just a minute to point out to the students that they exist.
Be a professional who cares for students and you will get the
    job you desire every time!
