In our lit book for 8th grade, we have The Monkey's Paw and
Tell-Tale Heart. The Pit and the pedulum is in the sophmore lit
book.
I have also see The Black Cat used in other 8th grade classes,
and I'm planning on using the Cask of Amirillado (spelling?!?)
by Poe next year.
This: http://knowingpoe.thinkport.org/default_flash.asp is a
really cool resource for Poe. It includes some stories as well
as other background about his life and death.
Personally, Goosebumps is WAY low level. They may be a little
insulted by this because most kids have moved on to the regular
RL Stine by upper middle school. I have kids way below the 8th
grade reading level, but with support they got through and
enjoyed Tell-Tale. I also did a four class building background
on Poe and the vocab he used.
