Re: The Best Place To Teach???PERKS!

Umm,
Fortunately, my specialty is not in language arts. However, I have
been around a fair number of teachers (of all areas) who know the
correct spelling and context of the words they are using. This
INCLUDES math and science teachers. In my state (Florida--Orange
Park just so we're clear) the General Knowledge test (that all
teachers must take and pass) requires teachers to be able to
communicate effectively to their students, peers and the public in
general. Not knowing which "whether" or "too" or "their" to use is
important, especially when we are teaching young children in their
formative years. Perhaps you have no problem knowing that teachers
in your community are poisoning your child's mind with incorrect
information, but as a parent and educator, I do.
It is attitudes like yours that enable teachers like this to go forth
and spread their ignorance to our youth. This attitude is what
allowed "ebonics" to be considered a language in California. It is
what allows children to leave high school unable to read beyond a
second grade level. It is the attitude that has allowed our nation's
school system to become what it is today.
Quite frankly, I'm appalled that an educator (or anyone, for that
matter) would defend that post. The misspelling of an occasional
word is completely understandable. The misuse is quite another
beast. In my opinion, this teacher should consider taking a
communication class, or just finding an old-fashioned dictionary the
next time he/she decides to post something online.
I hope that this person does NOT come to Orange Park, Florida to
teach in my community. I hope that my comment does make them steer
clear of here.
And by the way...I may be a Math Teacher, but I DID have to pass
English 101!!!!!! (Note the 6 exclamation points--do you think I may
have done that on purpose?) Also, your sentence "Ironic." is an
incomplete sentence...consider revising.
