How does assigning homework teach responsibility? It teaches compliance to
authority - it doesn't teach responsibility. Responsibility is doing the
right thing when you have a choice between doing the wrong thing and the
right thing.
If you don't give kids any real choice about homework, then what you're
doing is teaching them to comply with authority. Which is a lesson unto
itself but not one that has anything do with making responsible choices.
