Post: parents who challenge your assignments or grading

Posted by just me 5th/6th on 4/28/08

Hey master teachers, how about a little advice?

I am sick and tired of being put on the defensive by
parents who challenge the assignment or the grading
process. I teach at a school of "choice" (similar to a
magnet), so many of the parents seem to have the attitude
that they run the show, although I have run into this
problem at my previous school. I set high standards for
my students, explain projects thoroughly both orally and
in writing, answer questions, demonstrate, etc. etc. and
still I get one or two each time that don't meet basic
requirements. Parents challenge me on why I required this
or why I didn't give credit for that...of course, these
are usually the parents who did a large part of the
project themselves, which is a whole 'nother problem.

I am very frustrated right now and would like some
guidance. I am having trouble dealing with some of these
parents without getting snappish myself. Help!
