Reading has several components... sounding out words,
understanding vocabulary, comprehending a story, etc... he may
be at a fifth grade level in some of these areas and not in
    others.
If you can, find out what was involved in the assessment he was
given. That may give you a better idea of what the results mean
and which areas he may have demonstrated high abilties in. Was
he given a story to read? Was he asked questions about the story
or just asked to read it aloud? Was he just given a list of
words to read and no story? Etc.
Also keep in mind that even if his true instructional reading
level is fifth grade, a second grade student who is able to read
on a fifth grade level often shouldn't actually be
reading fifth grade material. His maturity level and interests,
and sometimes even vocabulary and sentence complexity, won't
necessarily match what you'd usually find in books intended for
    fifth graders.
