Re: The perfect math curr - Start at removing items
Posted by Waski_the_Squirrel on 4/29/08

I see too many topics too early. I teach both math and science and this is
    not unique to either one.

Kids really need to master the basics before they can move on to more
    advanced topics.

Do kids coming into junior high have a concept of place value, what
multiplication is, what a fraction is, how to use them (and when), percentages?

Some graphing is nice, but not essential. If they can come to junior high
with those core skills, then it is easier to move on to Algebra. If they
lack the core skills, Algebra is just a mass of confusion.

I'm all in favor of cutting the curriculum. A few years ago, I ordered the
science series from Singapore. It was not at all what I expected. It focused
on the core ideas. The books were surprisingly thin.

The math books also focus on core ideas. By allowing kids to develop these
core ideas, they are better able to use them.
