I often wonder about programs that expect young people to "discover" formulas that math scholars have previously discovered and tested to be true in all cases. If a student recognizes what is needed to solve a problem and knows where to look for an example of how to go about solving it, then implements this while solving the new problem, I feel the student has been successful.
