Re: IMPMath/ Math in general

The evidence I've read says that 'discovered' concepts stay with you no longer than 'taught' concepts. IMP spends 70 minutes a day, 5 days a week doing something that direct instruction does in 45x5 minutes a week. Given enough time, ANY math program can be successful, but the goal of k-12 math is to compress 2000 years of discovery by geniuses to 12 years of learning. It sounds like this student is being forced to discover (or not) things that a traditional class would just teach him. It doesn't sound as though it's actually open-ended. There are specific goals of the lesson, but they're obfuscated. Pragmatic.
