Thanks for the title of the program. Actually, I wasn't ignoring what the student said - it's just that she wanted to know why the teachers couldn't simply teach them the formulas and how to use them. I simply found it ironic that the previous year's teacher seems to have done just that and it STILL did not stay with the student. She said that she spent half an hour re- developing the formula before she even realized that she had learned it the previous year. So, what does that say aboutthe 'traditional' way of teaching? Obviously there are problems with both approaches. As I have stated before, in these dialogues regarding 'reform' mathematics programs, the program is only as good as the teacher. Unfortunately, not all teachers are trained in math. In middle schools, they can be 'generalists' - elementary school teachers who majored in education, and tend to be somewhat strong in math. But most of them cannot handle these programs. And districts do not wish to pay for teacher training. Students are never expected to 'teach themselves' the math. That's just poor teaching (or non-existent teaching). Students are supposed to have time to ponder the problem and put their heads together to come up with creative solutions. They are expected to use problem- solving strategies and search for patterns. BUT it is still up to the teacher to circulate among the groups, make sure that they are not getting too far off track, and finally, to poll the groups and pull it all together for the class.
