Post: Block Scheduling for math

Posted by researching parent on 5/02/08

    Hello math teachers,

I'm wondering if there is a concensus regarding block
scheduling in middle school for math.

Our principal said the extra time would be used for group
work and hands on projects. That sounds nice in theory,
but is it realistic to expect a math teacher to have these
activities every day? And don't 12 - 14 year olds have
    short attention spans?

The principal said a benefit will be less walking around
in the halls. That does sound good but don't some kids
need to get up and walk around regularly?

I can definately see the benefit of longer periods for
science, history and LA, because of labs and role playing
or group discussions and presentations; but I'm wondering
    about math.
