Re: Teaching an intro go Unit Circle - where do I start?
Posted by High School Teacher on 5/17/08

I would not bother showing the Unit Circle at this point. Exposing them to it
isn't going to mean much in 2 class periods and they'll certainly make/receive a
copy of it when they do need it for real (besides, how many kids are going to
keep it, even if it is laminated).
If you haven't done it yet, I'd teach them the special triangles (45-45-90 and
    30-60-90).
If you've already done that, then teach the students Right Triangle Trig not the
Unit Circle. Show them SOHCAHTOA and how it relates to the x, x, x sqrt(2) of
the 45-45-90 and the x, x sqrt(3), 2x of the 30-60-90 triangle. Parts of this
topic can be learned in 2 days (though some students will struggle longer -
some students have difficulty distinguishing among the opposite, adjacent, and
hypotenuse once you start rotating the triangle).

There are lots of websites out there on right triangle trig and sohcahtoa if you
    do a google search.

Good Luck & Hurrah for Summer! :)
