    Re: teaching math vocab
    Posted by Joy on 7/03/08

I really dislike when districts make decrees such as this
without saying what they expect you to do or what the
    purpose is.

I think the previous poster was spot on with the word wall.
In fact, I had a very successful word wall this year that
the kids referred to throughout the year and it was
incredibly helpful at the end of the year when we prepared
for the final exam. When I teach a topic I will make posters
during the lesson - sometimes this included vocabulary, most
often they contained math definitions, formulae, and
examples. For example, when we did exponential and log
functions I made posters with the equations for compounding
    interest, continuously compounding interest, "generic"
exponential growth. I also made a poster with the value of
e, an example of how to go form exponential to log form, the
definition of an exponential function (i.e. for an equation
to be considered exponential, this is what it has to
    have)....

Copying word definitions from a book or even giving word
definitions is just silly if it doesn't flow into how you
teach the actual math. If someone told me I had to "teach
vocabulary" I'd just keep making the posters as I'm doing
because I think that is the best way for me to teach
    "vocab."
