I think that most teachers are too 'stuck' on the text the district
chooses. No text is going to perfectly match your state standards -
and that is what needs to drive your curriculum.
What I DO like about Everyday Math, Trailblazers, Investigations
and the other 'reform' mathematics programs is that MOST of us
already know how to teach in a traditional fashion. We have no
problem creating worksheets, skills practice problems, assessments -
-- but (and I include myself here) we do not know how to come up
with the interesting, sink-your-teeth-into-it, thought-provoking
problems and projects that connect the skills together and
stimulate students' curiosity and ask them to use critical thinking
skills. That's the stuff we really need from the text. And,
unfortunately, the more traditional texts do not provide these
types of interesting activities.
