I always give both types of assessments. Quizzes give me a
quick snapshot of how the kids are doing and also tells the
kids what they still have to work on BEFORE the major test
that incorporates that topic.
They don't need to be long - just 5-10 quick questions. Most
of the new textbooks provide these quick assessments.
Quizzes also force some of the kids (some just don't care and
never will) to look at their notes occasionally.
