Brainstorm Carousels sound perfect for you. You put chart
paper around the room - on each chart paper you write
something (example include: a fraction, a number....). Since
your classes are so small you can either put them in pairs or
keep them as singles. Assign each student to a chart paper and
give them each a different (or same) colored marker. They
have 2 minutes to work that chart. Then you sound a bell for
them to move to the next one. Again they have 2 minutes and
then go to the next one. Keep doing this until they arrive
back to their original chart.
The post activity can vary - you can have students summarize
the responses on their charts. They can group the responses
on their chart into categories. You can take charge in
summarizing. This part is really up to you and your
needs/creativity.
As far as the actual charts, here are some ideas (I'm a high
school math teacher, so I don't know exactly what your topics
are, you'll have to think about what will be good for you):
On the top of a chart write a single fraction, ex 3/4.
Students have 2 minutes to list fractions equivalent to 3/4.
On the chart write a fraction and students have 2 minutes to
draw an example of something that is shaded in 3/4. On the
chart write a number. Students have to write expressions that
are equivalent to that number. ex. 10 = and students can
write 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 15 - 5. You can specify an operation they
have to use. For older students, perhaps you can say that
they have to use at least 3 numbers and 2 different
operations. Write a fraction on top and students have to write
2 fractions that add to the given fraction (or subtract, or
multiply...)
