    Post: Please Help ...
    Posted by: Donna/WI on 6/27/09

I have a student who is going into eighth grade, has
diagnosed ADHD but is not on meds, who retains a math lesson
for the day and then immediately forgets, cannot remember
multi-stepped operations, cannot understand or interpret
word problems, and estimates wildly. He is very good at
computing basic operations. He has a hard time focusing and
    paying attention to detail.

His step-grandma is a former high school Algebra teacher who
is of the opinion that he should be using a math book that
is copyrighted back in the 50's instead of the traditional
text our school uses. I have encouraged that he be screened
for possible disabilities, but mom doesn't want him to be
labeled. We are a private school. I know once he attend
public high school, he will be tested. As of today, mom says
she will home school him for high school. I don't know that
she would have the ability to do so.

How do I help this student? How do I respectfully explain to
grandma that a book from the 50's will not be the best
answer? Right now the best I can do is give him an adjusted
curriculum with adjusted assignments so he is not left
    completely in the dust.

I meet with the family Monday afternoon.

    Losing sleep over this,

    Donna
