Use red and black arkers. Use small numbers. Use red dashes
(-) for negative. Use black pluses (+) for positive. Put the
parallel to each other as you explain positive nd negative
numbers. - - - - - - - - - -9 + (+6)=
+ + + + + +
Tell them that red cancels black. Cross out the red and black
pluses and minuses until you have only one sign left. Ask
them to countthe signs left and what the answer is based on
the number and sgin. REmindthem that when you add positive
and negative numbers, they should always use the sign in
front of the larger number. The visual on the board
reinforces that statement.
