Post: need advice for gr 5 math class
Posted by: L on 11/06/09
I've started at a new school. Most of my class has their
basic facts down cold. They can calculate most problems in
their heads. I have about 6 kids who are completely lost
when it comes to anything to do with numbers...not just
basic facts, but comparing numbers, building them, etc.
This class is terrible at problem solving! I've been
trying to work with them on reading and understanding a
problem and then coming up with a suitable answer. We talk
a lot about HOW we solved problems.
I am finding it hard to plan for my class. There are
certain things I MUST cover in my district. Most of my
class doesn't need to circle around basic concepts, but I
do have to work on these for those other students who need
it. How can I keep them all engaged when there is such a
huge span of skills in the group? We don't have textbooks
and I am on a VERY LIMITED photocopying budget. Our
district really wants us to use manipulatives and our
smartboard. That's great for whole class instruction, but
what about individual practice of skills?
I'm feeling frustrated and would appreciate any help!
