    I teach high school math but often run into the same problem
    with varying degrees of ability. Maybe you could put them in
    pairs to work on a problem at their seat and then call on
    different kids to go to the board to work the problem out for
    the class. If they get it correct then great, and if they
    get it wrong have the rest of the class figure out why it is
    wrong. I give each student that goes to the board to attempt
    the problem (whether I call on them or they volunteer) a
    participation/extra credit point. I have done this in my
    class this year and my kids really like it. Not only do they
    get the extra point (which really doesn't add up to much, but
    they will do most anything for an extra credit point) but the
    more experienced students are helping the less experienced,
    the less experienced have the oppotunity to show you their
    work, and the whole class may get the chance to problem solve
    to see why a problem is wrong.
