Re: Is this attitude normal in middle school students?

    That is such a typical young teen reaction with someone who
    cares about you. Think about it. Students save the best
    attitude and the best "eye rolls" for their parents-the ones
    children know will love them regardless of their behavior.
    This could be a sign that she is secure that she will have
    you support.

    She may also be testing to see if you care about her enough
    to put a limit on her behavior. Only adults who CARE will go
    to the trouble to direct a child to behave appropriately.

    Talk to the student alone - you will get no where in front
    of her peers. Just tell her that behavior shocked you and
    you expect her to behave more respectfully to you. You might
    approach her with, "I don't think I did anything to deserve
    the disrespectful treatment you gave me. If I did, please
    let me know. I will treat you with respect, but you must
    also treat me with respect."
