Re: should I write a discipline...? Agree with Rebecca

I agree with Rebecca--the moment you involve admin, you are not
longer in control, but more importantly, Love and Logic works
better than any other classroom management system I've tried or
observed. The two major keys are to be compmassionate and to
let kids solve the problems they create by using natural and
logical consequences.
In your shoes, I would meet with this student for a heart to
heart and follow a similar protocol that Rebecca outlined. The
first two steps are conversational. The last step is a note the
student writes to me.
1. The student explains the problem--who/what/when/where the
problem happened.
2. The students comes up with 3 possible ways to make things
right (1 lunch detention with me, washing desks, letter of
apology, work in ISS room, picking up garbage around school,
calling parents, 1 week of detention, etc.)
3. The student writes a short fill-in-the-blank note to me.
Dear Ms. F, The next time I cause a problem such as ___________
(repeatedly talking out, being unprepared, disrupting another
student, throwing spitwads, etc.), I will make things right by
____________ (serving a silent lunch detention, washing desks,
sweeping the floor, writing a letter of apology, picking up
trash around school, etc.). If that doesn't work I will either
_______________ or _________________ (two more consequences).
I keep these notes at my teaching table as a reminder to myself
at the beginning of class and for easy access when I need it.
Without exception, when a student causes the problem again, the
consequence is served without resistance because it came from
the student, it wasn't imposed by me. And if the student has
to serve the consequence, I make a note of the date this
happened, and save the note to use if it's needed--it usally
isn't.
