Re: should I write a discipline on this student? would you?

What is your school policy on class disruptions? Is talking
to her one-on-one the only thing you've done? Obviously
that's not working. We are to talk with the student, but we
also talk to students as a team. Often students who disrupt
in one class disrupt in another. If that's the case, we
bring the student in to talk to ALL the teachers at the same
time. That often works. If it is just an isolated issue
with one teacher, we try to figure out the reason the child
behaves that way in that class and come up with a plan. (Of
course, you have to be on a team for this to work well.) We
call parents. We remove privileges. We document, document,
document. Once we've tried everything in our bag of tricks,
the student goes to the office. They typically do not go to
the office during a core class unless they are being
extremely disruptive. They are pulled during a non-core
class.
Now, about the cheerleading thing. Our sports coaches are
often not working at our school, so they have to come in
when they can to recruit students. Yes, they do often have
unannounced meetings. Yes, we do let the students go to the
meeting, even if we do not think the student is serious
about it. They deal with those students when they get to
the meeting. They usually have important information and
forms to give to the students, and they really need to be
there. I can be flexible. I would have let her go. With
many of our troubled kids, keeping them in an
extracurricular activity is the ONLY thing that keeps them
in line since they have to keep their grades up and behave
in class to get to participate.
