If 'exhausting all options in the classroom first' involves
taking away from your teaching and other students' learning on
a regular basis, then you need to get the office involved
sooner than later - before you 'lose' others in your class.
It sounds like this student is testing you - BIG time, and
she's looking for some kind of attention. Stay patient and
consistent with her, but she needs to know that her distracting
behavior is not acceptable in the class. If that requires
office support, so be it.
Fortunately, the current administrative philosophy in my school
is to support student learning/ teacher teaching. I do agree
with the poster who pointed out the importance of attempting to
make parent contact in order to gain support. Often one phone
call is all it takes for a student to have an attitude
adjustment. If the parents/guardians are not supportive or
nothing changes then do what you need to do manage the behavior
in your class. Asking the administration for support should not
be seen as a flaw. Sometimes a teacher needs a little help
and/or a student needs a 'time- out', office referral,
detention, visit with the counselor etc.
