Re: My class period seems short at 45 min!
    Posted by mrsd on 10/09/08

Except for lunch and study hall, we have 40 minute periods.
We have 10 periods a day. I've gotten VERY efficient with in-
class corrections. I've also got my instruction time very
regimented. I teach reading, language arts, and social
studies, so I have massive amounts of grading between the
writing in language arts and the reading/questions in social
studies. I've also resigned myself to the fact that not
everything gets graded. If it's complete, it gets 5 points.
Then, I deduct for questions not answered. I do that with
some of the reading/questions in social studies, because
students also take guided notes from PowerPoints and make
flashcards from vocabulary lists. They then have quizzes
from their reading and notes/flashcards. Those quizzes turn
into their tests. So, with all that "layering" I don't feel
like I'm shorting students by not always grading their
reading/questions. It's tight, but I rarely run out of time.
On those days that I have lots of notes or instructional
time, I either don't give homework or I give work that is
due in two or three days. The same goes for writing. I
sometimes only check off writing. Or, I score it on one
thing - maybe voice, conventions, or content. It goes much
faster that way. Good luck; I know it can be difficult! Karen
