Re: 1:1 student laptops at secondary level

Our students have had a device for 4 years now. It was piloted
with the GT students as a palm pilot type device, then moved to
a mini type computer with just 7th graders. This year the 8th
graders received mini notebooks. The students pay $30 for
insurance for the year. Any additional damages, they have to
pay for, such as banging on the screen & it broke, not working
correctly and not carrying it in protective case, etc.
The problems we have, is that our district's server is not
large enough now with 2 different devices. Each JH campus has
two technology people that work to issue, repair, update, etc.
the devices. They come in to classrooms to teach students how
to do something on the device if asked. They find activites
and create documents for the students to use.
Teachers went through 3 days of training for the different
devices. 2 days were teaching you how to use the different
features, and the 3rd day was spent creating lessons to use in
your classroom. It was helpful for some more than others. If
you are not computer savvy, then you needed more training it
seemed.
