Is this the first time you've had a substitute this year?
What did they offer as explanation for their behavior?
I don't believe in reacting - I respond. To respond
coherently to the situation, I'd need to know more. does it
happen every time you leave - I'm guessing it doesn't and so
these kids are not hardened criminals.
I'd want them to understand how this happened and how they
can prevent it the next time. A stern speech does not elicit
their input necessarily and I'd need that to know more than
what happened - I want to know why and I want them to know
why.
And never underestimate yourself - your stern disappointment
is a consequence and it can be a stinging one. If these are
students who enjoy your regard and with whom you have a good
relationship, your disappointment and dismay can wound deeply.
