    Cathy,
Sounds like you have some difficult challenges to address but
are trying to do the best you can.
I taught 7th and 8th grade math for several years and had to
give homework as well. Your "one page stories" with questions
sounds like a great alternative as I don't believe in sending
books home all the time either. Especially in middle school!

Maybe you could find some articles, stories, newspaper
article, etc. on their interest level (from Weekly Readers,
football players, etc.) and make it a packet for them to work
on all week? First night read and summarize, second night,
find all the adjectives, third night circle all the adverbs,
etc......and a wrap up on Friday's lesson? This would give
them enough but "not too much" if you know what I mean and
    not be overwhelming to them!

I just thought I would throw that out there. I know I am not
an expert in this field either.

Hope you find some suggestions! Have a great Friday! N Bitzer
