Post: help teaching parallel structure
My 8th graders (almost all of whom are at or above grade
level in reading) are having a tough time grasping the
concept of parallel structure. I've never taught 8th grade
before, so I've never had to explicitly teach parallel
structure as a brand-new skill. We spent all of last week on
it and I thought they were getting it, but the test they
took on Monday says otherwise. I need to reteach it, but I'm
out of strategies. I did a lot of modeling last week, plus
we found examples of parallel structure in our reading. We
also looked at sentences that did not have parallel
structure and made them parallel. I handed out sentences
that were parallel, had groups rewrite them to make them not
parallel, then trade with other groups who would then
rewrite them to make them parallel again. We also did about
a ream of parallel structure homework (and reviewed it).
I'm particularly looking for strategies that involve either
Thinking Maps or Kagan strategies, both of which are the big
deal in our school district this year.
