I do use a reading log. I require two hours of outside
reading per week. I offer rewards for going above and beyond
the two hours. I try to mix it up so that it doesn't go
stale- for a few weeks there might be group reward, then class
rewards, and sometimes individual rewards. They don't need
to be anything material or monetary. Sometimes just offering
preferential seating is enough of a reward for some kids.
I like logs because I can then clearly see who is and is not
reading outside of school. If they don't, I try to see what
the reason is... Do they simply need some parental guidance
and need to establish a routine? Are they trying to read
books that are too difficult? Do they need to mix it up with
magazines and newspapers?
The more kids read, the more successful they will be in school
