I require approximately 100 minutes of at home reading per
week. I do not have logs. However, once a week they do a one
page reading response. They have their choice of several
different questions to respond to. I can generally tell by
their answers whether they have read or not. They are alos in
an Accelerated Reading program so I can tell by the nimber of
points they earn.
I realize that all children do not enjoy reading. To be honest
with you, I do not enjoy science, but I still had requirements
that needed to be fulfilled in science. It was not an option
and if I chose not to fulfill those requirements, it was
reflected in my grade. I feel the same way about reading
To those parents concerned that you do not have a log for their
child, remind then that as parents THEY can require a certain
amount of reading be done daily and enforce it by reading at
the same time as they do. A good model is the best way to
encourage reading.
