It's a huge news story right now in my local community. A 13-year-old student, a 7th grader at a local middle school, was killed by a car this week while walking home from school. I had just subbed for one of his teachers on the last school day before he was killed. (There were snow days and weekend days in between.) He was one of my students on what would become the second-to-last school day of his life.

There have been a number of community events in his honor, including a candlelight vigil and an online fundraiser for the family that has raised $25,000. I, myself, have just placed an order for 1,000 "In Memory of..." wristbands for the students at the school.

The student who was killed left behind three siblings. The driver was on her way to pick up her own 7th grade student at the same school. (Her child and the child who she struck were classmates.)
