Re: duties for a teacher assistant
Posted by Cheryl on 4/27/08

Ok this is going to be lengthy but this is what we instruct
our assistants who are new to Montessori. OF course some are
specific to my class needs but it's more than this & some
should be gathered through experience in the environment and
    by intuition.

    1) Materials on edge of shelf
    2) Waterwork must be prepared everyday.
    3) Art shelf must be ready.
    4) Emphasis on proper way to carry & return materials
    5) Work must be returned the way it was.
    6) Chair must always be pushed in.
    7) Guide to be as independent as possible
    8) Make sure pencils are sharpened.
    9) Have tracing paper, construction paper cut & ready.

    8) For new children, emphasis on :
    a) Asking for lessons before getting work out.
    b) Walking/talking methods in class
    c) Carrying & returning materials correctly.
    d) Using a carpet
    e) Pushing in chair
    f) Circle time etiquette

    9) Always remain calm in all situations.
    10) Use quiet/soft/gentle voice.
    11) Always go to child, do not yell across room.
    12) Give every child compliments often, like thumbsup,
    hugs, wink, smile, etc
    13) No matter how unpleasant an action by a child,
attempt to talk to child gently to calm them perhaps by
removing them to another quiet area in class.
    14) Never interrupt a working child.
    15) Attempt to guide child to work & not delegate tasks
    unless absolutely necessary.
