Montessori writing progression begins with "indirect preparations"
to strengthen the hand in the practical life and sensorial
exercises. The child also is taught to trace cursive sandpaper
letters and associate the sound with the symbol. There is then a
stage where the sandpaper letter is combined with a chalkboard or a
tray of sand. This stage involves lots of repetition with single
letters, then combinations. When we start to use pencil and paper,
we using unlined large strips of paper and the child writes single
words as labels. This progresses to using lined paper and thinner
strips. This is also prepared for by use of the Metal Insets.
Children in Montessori classes are shown lessons and allowed to
repeat them as they are interested and commonly work on "academic"
work at young ages.
