I am in the same boat as you.
I am teaching a 2/3 after 3 years of teaching just 2.
I have 17 2nd graders and 8 3rd graders... 7 of which are my
former students.
I teach them out of their own curriculum so that there isnt
an overlap, but for science and social studies, I teach them
both together... they are really the same but the 3rd is
more indepth. So I just make sure that I touch upon all the
vocab for 2nd grade while teaching out of the 3rd grade
text. Next year they will have a different teacher that
will do different things or if I DO have them.. I will just
do something different as far as projects... so thats a
problem!
I copied and am copying TONS of packets for independant work
for each level. I assign one of the two groups an
assignment to intro what I am teaching that day... if they
finish they do the packet. This is while I am
teaching/instructing the other group. After instructing
one, I switch.
They both get taught and are working on independant work...
I normally have 5-15 minutes at the end. I just run from
desk to desk assisting where needed. Both groups know to do
the packet when they finish or are waiting to get my help.
If you have an assistant, I would use them to answer
questions for the kids who are independantly working, while
you are teaching.
Our school has a bunch of splits
We have
1-1st grade english and 1 spanish
1-1/2 split
1-2nd spanish
1-2/3 spllit
1-3rd english and 1 spanish
1-4th
1-4/5 split english and 1 spanish
1-5th
I started the year teaching 2nd only... but only had 17...
the only 3rd grade english class had 37... so I became a
split on day #15 of school. It was hard... this is my first
full week with them and with planning both. It took me 2.5
hours yesterday to plan! :-(
Good luck.... and if you come up with any super ideas... let
me know!
