Post: Exploration time in 1/2 multiage

    Posted by Melissa on 4/28/09

I am going into my first year as a multiage teacher after 3
years teaching straight 1st grade. I have been reading a
lot about multiage and am trying to find out as much as I
can. I have a partner teacher who is also doing a 1/2
multiage. I was reading one book (I can't even remember
which one!) and it talked about exploration time that a
teacher incorporated into her daily schedule. This was 50
minutes a day and students got to do whatever they wanted
around the classroom (blocks, art, research, science
experiments, etc.). She explained that explore time was the
most valuable part of her day. Students were free to wander
between the multiage classrooms as well. I've talked with
my teaching partner and she is open to the idea. I was
wondering does anyone do this in the classroom? I'm not
sure what materials to have available and how to structure
it? I'm not starting until next year but I just need a
vision of what it would like in my classroom. Any ideas?
