I consider myself a good teacher. I have taught for 4 years but two incidents in the recent past have left me wondering - what is going on in our schools?

First apparently I made a sixth-grade girl cry in Reading class because I said if you dont work hard, you won't get in to a good college.

Then another time I told the story of a close friend who was killed in Afghanistan. It wasn't graphic. I just said h e was shot by a sniper. Well, the principal found out about it from a student and I had to have an investigatory confere nce.

I'm not a nasty person, but we've created a culture in some schools where kids now run to administration with every litt lle thing that bothers them, and the teacher is seen as some sort of monster.

Should I not read a story that contains a death? Will that u pset another student. I've stopped telling stories now becau se I fear more consequences. Where does it end?
