anon,
Does he whistle on only one pitch?
How about hum?
Can he mimic a siren?
Does he have a falsetto?
And what about speaking -- does he sound like a robot?
My guess is that his issue is not that he can't actually sing
more than one pitch, but that he doesn't understand / has yet
to internalize the concept of pitches.
If I were you, I would approach him gently but
straightforwardly, telling him that you'd like to work with
him - perhaps on a regular basis. "How would that be for you?
Would you have any interest in doing that?" you might ask.
And if he agrees to even one session, I would explore the
concept of pitches in general - through listening to you and
identifying higher/lower, through sirens, whistling, humming,
falsetto, and through speech.
RE the last category, I would engage him in conversation,
then parrot back to him one of his sentences ... WITH PITCH
AS THE THING YOU MOST FOCUS ON. Then have him do it again,
parroting you parroting HIM. Once he gets that, mix it up a
little, and stress certain words differently - using
different pitches as well.
See how he does with the whole notion of spoken pitches, then
transition directly to "singing" by holding certain words
out. As Harold Hill says, "Singing is merely sustained
talking." Ice cream, anyone? (:-)
If you do any of this, please share the results.
All my best,
Tom
PS: Where do you live? I'd love to volunteer to work with him
if he's anywhere near San Jose, CA.
