My 2 cents:
1. See if you can get him into his falsetto. That's a good
1st step if he can do it.
2. Does he really "sing" one pitch, or is that just the note
of a kind of low groan? Try first just getting him to let
out a long exhale. Then, have him phonate on the long exhale
(not really a pitch). Then, have him try to make any pitch
while he exhales (NOT sing, just exhale). If he can get
sound on the breath, sometimes that will help him raise pitch.
3. I've seen devices made from PVC joints that look like a
giant phone. They allow singers to sing into one end and
have the tone go directly into one ear. Sometimes hearing
yourself that loudly helps correct pitch.
4. Just sitting in a section and trying does help.
Sometimes the brain and body natural fix things on their own,
but it can be a long and hard process.
