No, I don't see a need for formal concert attire, but they
should try to look nice. In some areas, just getting children
to dress up is a big chore. Others need more direction than
that. We've gone a little more formal in our district, but
that's the nature of our district!
The elementary choirs in our district (4th-5th-6th grades) wear
black pants, black socks, black shoes that THEY provide. Then
we provide the white tux shirt, red cummerbunds, and red bow
ties. The white tux shirts are loaned out on a semester basis,
but the "reds" never leave the school or performance area.
My choir was on KUSI-TV in San Diego, about 4 years ago. One of
the newscast people commented that we were about the most
formally dressed elementary groups that they had on their
station that season. Most were in pants and matching polo
shirts, or similar. But they looked very nice, as well!
